Shin Yu Pai & Steve Peter: splintered A site-specific sound / text installation

opening reception June 1st
splintered is a site-specific multi-channel sound and text installation by poet Shin Yu Pai and composer Steve Peters. Pai's poetry, inspired by the ancient barn itself and written on site, is heard in fragments scattered around the space. Isolated words and phrases perpetually recombine to create new associations and images. The text is combined with similarly fragmented recordings of objects encountered in the barn on a series of visits various items from Bitters Co.'s inventory (glass, metal, ceramics) as well as parts of the structure itself.

Shin Yu Pai is a poet, essayist, visual artist, and curator. She is the author of several poetry collections including AUX ARCS (La Alameda), Adamantine (White Pine), Sightings (1913 Press), and Equivalence (La Alameda). A new book, ENSO which presents a 20-year survey of her work in book arts, visual and public art, and poetry is due out in Fall 2019 from Entre Rios Books. She works as an events producer for Atlas Obscura and received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. (

Steve Peters composes music and sound for concerts, recordings, art venues, public places, dance/theater, radio, and moving image. His work is often site-based, combining location sound with voices, instruments, electronics, and found or natural objects. He performs with the Seattle Phonographers Union and frequently collaborates with artists in other disciplines. He is the director of Nonsequitur, a non-profit organization presenting adventurous music via the Wayward Music Series at the Good Shepherd Center Chapel in Seattle. (
